Remembering Mr. Shawn – Garrett Derrah
This small but powerful article written by McPhee is based on the death of the famous Mr. Shawn. As McPhee describes him, he was an editor of high standards, and there was not much that got through his watchful eye. Mr. Shawn was also one of the most renowned editors of The New Yorker because of his dedication to his job and ability to perceive how well a proposed article will do. McPhee brings to light a lot of the occasions where Mr. Shawn has shot down a lot of McPhee’s own articles because of the subject matter, only on rare occasions would Mr. Shawn let something like road kill slide. McPhee writes with a reminiscent tone, and discusses some of his and Mr. Shawn’s more memorable encounters. As stated in my brief summary on this article it is rather short, considering the rather severe nature of the article. Typical of McPhee, is his jumping from one topic to the next with almost no transition and we see this in the memories of Mr. Shawn that McPhee writes.
